Be a Hero!
'Be a Hero' - This program by your Community Blood Bank is designed to introduce the value of donating blood to students in Kindergarten through 8th grade.
School administrators and educators
It is our goal to educate the children of our community, in an effort to build a future donor base and to gain the participation of both faculty and parents in order to meet our ever growing blood needs. Involving your school in this worthwhile program will teach your students to become more community minded and also provide a much needed service. Maintaining an adequate blood supply for our patients is an ever-increasing challenge. In our service area alone, we need more than 75 units of blood every day!
Our 'Be a Hero' program consists of the following:
A 20-25 minute presentation to the involved classes (K-8th grade). This includes a basic science lesson on blood, blood products and their uses as medicine. The importance of assuming community responsibility is also discussed. For Kindergarten through 3rd grade, we prefer to present to individual classes or small groups. For 4th through 8th grade we like present to classes that "double-up" or to assembly groups.
Materials are handed out to the children at the end of our presentation. These include a CBB blood drive flier with a reply slip attached, coloring sheet or word search, and stickers. Please be sure to let your students know that they will receive an award for bringing in a signed reply slip!
Appoint a contact person to work closely with our school coordinator (most schools use the nurse or an office secretary). The contact person will collect the returned slips from the teachers, and can help in scheduling a room and time for our presentation.
Schedule a start time between 2:00 and 4:30 p.m. The drive will usually last into the early evening, with the number of hours determined by the potential donors signed up. Good locations to set up for a blood drive are the cafeteria, the library or any other room that is large enough for four chairs and a place to interview potential donors. We can also send our bloodmobile to the school and set up in a parking lot. Please review our bloodmobile requirements to ensure that you have an adequate area.
